RESEARCH USING THE FEMINIST PAINTALONG
Creating art together as a conduit for conversation
The Feminist Paintalong has been used as a tool in two research projects.
One looked at female genital appearance and cosmetic surgery and took place in Belgium, the second looked at menstrual health and menstrual experiences in Bristol.
As an art based intervention, the Feminist Paintalong allows participants to focus their attention on creating a painting, which allows "people to focus their attention on a third thing rather than on each other, making interpersonal engagement more comfortable" (Simon, 2010). Ideal for these types of research which can be sensitive for the participants.
so they can converse freely about the painting rather than their personal experiences.
sitting shoulder to shoulder rather than face to face. converstaion is easier.
Previously, work created in this group has been shown at the Empower Me! exhibition at the g39 gallery in Cardiff.
These sessions took place from September 2018 until September 2021. Find out more about Women's Aid RCT here.
